The year 2022 brought us a lot in terms of interior design trends that will most likely follow us into the new year. With only 3 months left in 2022, we are able to see what has trended throughout the entire year and make better predictions about what interior designs trends 2023 may bring us. In 2022, we really fell in love with nature-inspired renovations that were both sustainable and multi-functional. We will bring those same desires into 2023 and continue to tap into them even deeper. Below, you will find some of the top interior remodeling trends we see dominating interior design in 2023.
A Newfound Focus on Health
With the coronavirus pandemic raging from 2020 all the way into 2022, our society has started to place even more emphasis on not only physical health, but mental health as well. These new priorities have influenced the way we remodel our homes in order to be both aesthetic and beneficial to our overall wellbeing. Wellness design has become a quite popular interior design trend with its purpose being to create spaces that are good for both mental and physical health. Some examples of wellness design include installing water filters, monitoring air quality, using sustainable materials, and creating spaces to relax.
Minimalism is out, Maximalism is in
Maximalism is exactly what it sounds like- the opposite of minimalism. What exactly does that mean though? Maximalism is an aesthetic of excess. Unlike minimalism, which is focused on making a statement with less, maximalism is all about populating your home with goods that you love. After the recession in 2008, interior design switched over to a more minimalist style due to a lack of disposable income. In more recent years, society has been accumulating more disposable income, collecting items of interest, traveling more frequently, and in turn populating their living spaces with significant and meaningful art and décor.
Younger generations have taken a liking to the more maximalist style of interior design. They like incorporating plants, eclectic colors, and other unique accessories into their homes. The idea of maximalism is to feature colors, shapes, tones, and textures that altogether create an over-the-top yet aesthetically pleasing living space.
Blurred Lines Between the Outdoors and Indoors
If you couldn’t tell already, there is a significant trend towards including nature and sustainability into our homes in 2023. The year 2023 will see a decrease in materialism and an increase in value-driven and sustainable materials. Design elements like recycled materials, reclaimed wood, plants, and sunlight will all be trending.
A great way to merge the indoors and outdoors in by renovating your spaces to include more of the outdoors around you. For example, you can add a sunroom to your home that allows for natural sunlight to enter, even installing large picture windows that open and close, allowing you to make your home one with nature.
Multifunctional Rooms
With the coronavirus pandemic causing many of us to turn our homes into workspaces, the idea of multifunctional rooms has become quite popular. Multipurpose rooms are a great solution for homeowners trying to use their space more effectively and efficiently. There are so many ways to make rooms multifunctional and hiring an experienced remodeling company is a much easier way to make this happen. For example, you can hire a contractor to transform your kitchen into not only a kitchen, but a workspace as well. Adding a massive kitchen island is not only perfect for making intricate family-style meals but for doing that big work project you have due at the end of the week as well.
The More Color the Better
In 2023, we expect to see bold interior home painting with pops of colors. Each fall, both interior design experts and paint companies predict what colors will shape our homes in the new year. Although the hues of 2022 prioritized more natural shades of green, 2023 is more focused on self-expression. While green isn’t going out of style in 2023, we will definitely see the addition of more eye-catching colors like the vibrant red-orange Raspberry Blush by Benjamin Moore and also more soothing colors like Gentle Violet by Valspar.
“Digital Lavender”
In line with the idea of more soothing colors, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2023 is going to be “Digital Lavender,” a purple shade representing both wellness and digital escapism. With the increased adoption of technology to create connections and stay connected, the lines between natural and artificial colors have started to become blurred. “Digital Lavender” is considered to be a hue that embodies harmony and connectivity, creating a new look that expresses the digital connectivity of the world we live in today.
Home Spa
Staying with the theme of self-care and focusing on our health, home spas are all the rage right now. With the stress and anxiety created by the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, more people are looking to indulge in self-care practices from the comforts of their own homes. People are adding things like saunas, soaking tubs, and even steam rooms to their bathrooms. Some are even adding refrigerators to store champagne and wine to enjoy when they use their new jacuzzi to unwind after a tough day of work (probably all done from their kitchen workspace).
Smart Homes
With the increased reliance on technology to stay connected during the pandemic, it’s no wonder people are digitally renovating their homes. Smart devices are all the rage right now, ranging from things like a robot vacuum to an Amazon Alexa. With digital hubs like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, you can actually program your smart devices to work together to complete multiple tasks at once, like adjusting temperature and lighting right when you get home from work. There are smart devices for pretty much every room of your house that can make your life a lot more convenient.
